Welcome to Connect! Unite! Act!
A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, you have something to say. Say anything, it will be well received. Join any of our communities at Daily Kos, just for camaraderie!
Who is your favorite character actor?
A character actor is “a supporting actor who plays unusual, interesting, or eccentric characters” and is usually contrasted with a leading actor. I ask the question because today is the 109th birthday of Burgess Meredith, who died in 1997 at age 88. Like many actors, Meredith began on the stage, advanced to the movies, and arrived at television. He was not always a character actor, having played many leading roles in his youth, but his lasting popular fame comes from his supporting roles as TV Batman’s Penguin and Rocky’s gravel-voiced manager, Mickey Goldmill.
There are many character actors I admire. Generally, they are actors who don’t fit the typical Hollywood stereotype of handsome or beautiful. They may be unusually large or small, have crooked teeth or “weird” hair or a large nose, suffer from a disability, appear to be a particular ethnicity, or have an unusual voice or accent. They tend to be the sidekick or the villain rather than the hero.
As a kid, I loved cowboys. I especially remember sidekicks like Andy Devine and Walter Brennan back in the 1950s and 60s and bad guys like Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach.
But character actors are not just men. Who can forget Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind’’s Hattie McDaniel as Mammy?
These days, my favorite character actor is Steve Buscemi. I think he’s been terrific in everything I’ve seen him in, especially Fargo. In recent years, he’s become such a box office and ratings draw that he gets to play leading men sometimes as well as his trademark supporting characters.
So what about you?
