Have you ever lived in a house with an attic?
I mean a proper attic, not just storage space in the rafters with a couple of planks laid across the trusses. I mean an attic with a floor and maybe a gable window. You know, those musty-smelling treasure troves of trash and trepidation.
When I was a kid, we had an attic. We had a pull-down stair that led to it, and you pulled a cord at the top of the stair to light a single bare lightbulb. I didn’t go up there much, but when I did, I loved to rummage through the cardboard boxes, broken furniture, and mildewy old trunks and suitcases. Mostly they were filled with old books and papers and clothes and photographs and letters. My dad’s old Army uniform hung from a hook. A cracked mirror and a dozen empty Mason jars collected dust in one corner. The only thing up there that we ever really used were the Christmas decorations, stacked in labeled boxes against a slanted wall. Occasionally in my searches I would find a “treasure”—an Indian head penny, a Mercury dime, an old postage stamp, a broken watch, or a piece of costume jewelry gone green. But mostly it was the thrill of the unknown and the voyeuristic excitement of examining the details of past lives that lured me up there.
The best attics seem to be found in old houses. I know some newer homes have attics, but there’s something about a dusty, musty attic in an old Victorian house. It can be comforting, intriguing, and scary all at the same time. It’s the scary that makes attics popular in horror movies. They are cobwebby and shadowy and a perfect place for Freddie to hide.
We don’t have a proper attic in our house these days. We do have a large finished basement with a “playroom,” which was once where my sons played and which is now full of worthless junk. But it doesn’t feel the same as an attic.
So how about you CUActors? Do you now live, or have you ever lived, in a house with an attic?
THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY
Nationwide: January 21, 2017
Find your march here and start a group effort to march together, it will be listed here in CUA.
Women’s March on America, inspired by the Women’s March on Washington, calls on all Americans across the political spectrum to hold marches on the same day, at the same times, in communities across the country.
Together, we will send a message to our leaders and the world that the United States of America stands for values of human decency, equal rights and freedom from discrimination.
Our vision is that on January 21, 2017, the day after the Inauguration, Americans will unite in towns, cities, and schools across the nation to march in solidarity with communities affected by hate, intolerance, and acts of violence.
Many of us will not be able to make it to the march in Washington, DC. But we can come together in our local communities to march for our shared values.
